How this is worked out

Tax. 2026 federal brackets and the 0/15/20% long-term capital gains stack.
Lots. One average-cost row per ticker. Suggested shares use that average — not specific identification. Load My Holdings pulls open positions (shares, average cost, live price). Holding period uses first-buy date when My Holdings has a real one — Alpaca/SnapTrade often do not, so check the Holding column. Book is USD; country only switches tax rules.
Holding. SA: 3yr+ uses CGT (s9C deemed capital). <3yr income shows the revenue case — full gain at marginal rates, no R50k / 40%. US: long-term vs short-term (1 year). UK: CGT vs trading income (no 3-year clock).
Fill free room. Realize CGT / long-term winners up to leftover 0% LTCG band (US), £3,000 CGT exempt (UK), or R50,000 exclusion (SA). Income-nature winners are skipped — filling those would be taxed as salary. Does not realize gains just to cancel a YTD loss.
Harvest losses. Realize CGT losers to offset YTD net gains, then (US only) down to a $3,000 net loss vs ordinary income. Income-nature losers can reduce other income (SA/UK) or net with capital (US). Extra unrealized losses are left for another year.
Best. Picks the option with the lowest extra tax this year. Gains and losses net in the same year — you cannot fill the free band and keep a large harvested loss without them cancelling.
Not included. Wash-sale / bed-and-breakfast matching, specific-ID lots, exact day-count holding (the Holding column is a toggle), NIIT, state tax, SA interest exemption, and currency conversion.
